The Rubicon Trail – Useful Information Before You Go

What Is The Rubicon Trail? 

If you enjoy off-roading in the western U.S., then you have probably heard of the Rubicon Trail.  If you haven't heard of it, or you're interested in more details, then you need to continue reading. Simply put, the Rubicon Trail is one of those Bucket List destinations for American overlanders. The 22-miles of alternating 4x4-trail and road has something for everyone.

Where Is The Rubicon Trail?

Located in California's historic gold rush territory, the trail snakes its way through parts of the Sierra Nevada range.  Approximately 63-miles east of Sacramento, on Interstate 50, is the junction with Ice House Road. Traveling on this road north out of Riverton will put you at Loon Lake after 23.4-miles. The Loon Lake trailhead sits at an elevation of 6,331 feet. The trail continues to climb in this section and it is here that overlanders will experience many of the legendary obstacles.

Enjoy public lands and rivers safely this summer

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – This Memorial Day weekend, public land visitors will be heading outdoors for recreational opportunities like fishing, swimming, camping, rockhounding, backpacking, hiking, boating and off-highway vehicle use.

In California, the Bureau of Land Management oversees 15 million acres of public lands that support the agency’s multiple-use mission, which includes 1,735 miles of nationally designated trails and 356 miles of rivers.

This July, Americans will celebrate the 242nd anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.  Drafted by Thomas Jefferson, the document was adopted by the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, formally declaring that America’s 13 colonies viewed themselves as free and independent states.  In honor of Independence Day, the American Battlefield Trust — a national nonprofit organization that preserves battlefields of the Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and Civil War — recommends these eight family-friendly Fourth of July events at historic destinations nationwide:

Try a Star Tour for a change of scenery

A recent astronomical event caused major excitement throughout the North American continent as a rare total eclipse of the moon was visible.  Those lucky enough to be within the direct of the path were treated to an unforgettable sight. For those not in the direct path, the next best thing was a trip to a local observatory to gaze upon the heavens in wonder.

Okay, being in a southern California location was not the optimal point to view the eclipse. However, there is a well-known bed and breakfast in Julian that caters to amateur astronomers and provides a means to view heavenly bodies. And, it was time for me to re-acquaint myself with the spectacular stars.
